Can oral Pentosan help my knee OA while doing PT?

Hey all, tbh I’ve been dealing with chronic knee pain from early‑onset osteoarthritis for the past year. Physical therapy helped a bit, but the swelling and crepitus flare up after each session. I read the brief on Pentosan Polysulfate (the Cartrophen version) and saw it’s used for cartilage support and joint pain reduction. I’m thinking of trying the 100 mg oral dose three times a day while I continue PT and occasional diclofenac gel.
Has anyone actually used the oral form for knee OA? How long did you stay on it before noticing any change? Did you have any GI upset or weird side effects like mild bruising? Also, any tips on timing the doses around workouts or PT sessions – whether it’s better to take it with meals or on an empty stomach?
I’m a bit cautious about the bleeding risk, especially since I still do some light weight work. Any advice or personal experience would be super helpful. Thanks! 🦵👀

- hank_m: I gave oral pentosan a go for a few months after a doc mentioned it for my own knee grind, tbh i was on 100 mg three times a day while doing thrice‑weekly physio and low‑key squats, and i split the doses with meals just to dodge any stomach weirdness – the first week i felt a bit looser stools but no real nausea, and by week 4 the swelling after PT was noticeably less, the crepitus still showed up but not as loud. I kept an eye on bruising and didn’t see extra spots, but i did run a quick blood
- holly763: Thanks for the details, hank_m. I’ll probably split mine with meals too, my gut’s a bit sensitive. Good to know the stool change settled after a week and you didn’t see extra bruising. I’m planning to run a CBC and PT/INR at the 4‑week mark like you did. Do you think it helped your squat depth or just the swelling? 👀
