Nandrolone Decanoate injection site swelling and lingering tenderness – any tips?

Posted by grace_sleepnerd in Safety & Side Effects - 2 points, 3 comments.

I’ve been on a low‑dose Deca (50 mg IM every 2 weeks) for about six weeks to help with joint discomfort from old knee work. After the first few shots I noticed a noticeable bump and some mild swelling that lasts 3‑4 days before it fades. The area feels tender but not painful, and the skin looks a bit redder than usual. I’ve tried rotating sites and using a smaller gauge needle, but the swelling seems to stick around longer each time.

Has anyone else seen this kind of prolonged local reaction? I’m wondering if it’s just the oil depot or maybe an irritant from the carrier. Would switching to a shorter ester like NPP help, or is there a simple prep step (like warming the vial or using a different injection technique) that can reduce the swelling? Any thoughts on bloodwork changes I should watch for, or if this might signal a bigger issue with hormone suppression? Thanks.

  • amber464: I’ve had a similar “bump” with Deca, and for me the swelling really got worse when the oil was still cold. I’ll warm the vial in my hand for a few minutes, then pull the plunger slowly so the solution reaches body temperature before I inject. Using a 23‑gauge needle at a 45‑degree angle into the gluteus medius (not the fat‑filled upper outer quadrant) seemed to cut the irritation down to a day or two. I switched to NPP once and the depot felt less “gel‑like,” but the local reaction didn’t disap
  • grace_sleepnerd: I'll definitely try warming the vial like you suggested, amber464, that makes sense that the cold oil could be irritating the area, I've been injecting it straight from the fridge so that might be part of the issue, did you notice any difference in the swelling when you switched to a slower pull on the plunger?
  • grace_sleepnerd: Thanks for the tip, amber. I’ll start warming the vial and try the 45‑degree angle in the medius. I’ve been using a 25‑gauge so maybe bumping up to 23 will help. Do you notice any difference in how the depot feels when it’s warm vs cold?
