Metformin’s Place in My Longevity Stack – A Personal Take

I’ve been playing around with metformin for a bit now, mostly out of curiosity but also because I’m into that longevity angle. You know, the TAME trial stuff’s been floating around, and as a pharmacist, I’ve always been skeptical of jumping on every trend without digging.

- derek572: I’ve tried metformin myself for about a year mainly to keep my fasting glucose in check after a weight loss spurt. Anecdotally the biggest thing I felt was a mild increase in gut discomfort early on, which kicked in after about 250 mg twice a day and settled after I cut it to 125 mg once a night. The bloodwork I did after three months showed a drop of about 5 mg/dL in fasting glucose and a small lift in insulin sensitivity markers, but nothing dramatic. - omar_v: Ngl, I’ve had similar gut issues with metformin but found cutting the dose helped. Your log idea’s smart, any chance you tracked how often the discomfort hit? 👀
- ethan_reads: Thanks, Omar. I’ve been logging my gut sensations since I started 500 mg a day, and after cutting to 250 mg I saw the bloating drop from almost daily to only a couple of times a week. I’ll post a quick snapshot of the log, do you keep a similar log?
- ethan_reads: I started at 500 mg once aStress day and didn’t notice any gut upset until month two when I pushed to 750 mg; I’ve since backtracked to 250 mg nightly. Your 5 mg/dLIncorrect drop in fasting glucose after three months matches what I’ve seen, but I’m still not seeing that energy lift you mentioned. Did you take your dose with a meal or on an empty stomach? I’m curious if the timing made any difference in your insulin sensitivity markers.
