Confused about berberine dosing and timing for blood sugar

I have been reading up on berberine lately because I am keen to try and sort out my metabolic health, but I am a bit lost on how to actually start. I keep seeing people call it nature's metformin, which sounds pretty intense ngl.

Most of the stuff I find online says something about 500 mg taken two or three times a day, but I am not sure if that is a good way to begin. Should I be taking it specifically with meals to avoid the stomach issues people talk about? I have heard it can cause quite a bit of cramping or even diarrhea if you get the timing wrong.

I also noticed the half life is only about two and a half hours, so I am wondering if that means the effects are constantly dipping in and out. It seems like a lot of maths to work out for a beginner. Does anyone actually find it easy to stick to a schedule with that, or does it feel like you are constantly chasing the dose? I am quite nervous about messing up my blood sugar levels, so if anyone has a simple way they started, I would appreciate it.

Anecdotally that ramp-up made a big difference for the GI stuff, going straight to two or three doses from day one seems to be where people get into trouble with cramping. I take it with food, always. Empty stomach was a mistake I only made once. The half-life thing sounds worse than it plays out in practice, at least for me. You are not chasing a peak like a stimulant, it seems to have more of a
  • fasted_scientist: Cheers for that, the ramp-up approach makes sense. I was worried about the GI stuff so starting with one dose at my biggest meal sounds like a sensible way in. The cumulative effect point is interesting too, I was definitely thinking about it wrong, like it is something you need to keep topped up hour by hour. Did you notice any shift in your fasting glucose at all, or was it more something you felt day to day in energy and cravings?
