trying pentosan polysulfate after my ACL repair – any joint pain data?

i was about to finish my 6‑month rehab from an ACL reconstruction when the knee began to ache again. i read a bit about pentosan polysulfate sodium – the same compound used for interstitial cystitis, but apparently it can support cartilage repair. for what it is worth, i started taking 100 mg three times daily, exactly as the typical oral dose is described in the literature.

after a few weeks i noticed that the stiffness in the morning was a little less and the swelling was lower when i walked or sat for long periods. it didn’t eliminate the pain, but it did reduce the need for over-the-counter NSAIDs, which i was trying to avoid. i’ve not done any objective measurements, and i know this is just my personal anecd ঘটন.

i'd be interested to hear from others who have tried it for joint or tendon recovery, especially about timing around workouts or physiotherapy sessions. any observations or side‑effects would be helpful.

  • chemist_daily: fwiw I haven’t tried pentosan polysulfate myself but I did use a low‑dose glucosamine/chondroitin mix after my own meniscus scope a while back. I noticed a similar mild drop in morning stiffness and less reliance on ibuprofen, though the effect was subtle and took about three weeks to show up. I kept the supplement on non‑training days and took it with food to avoid any stomach upset. If you’re experimenting, tracking pain scores before/after physio sessions could help you see whether timing ma
  • dominic_d: thanks chemistdaily for the insight. i kept my pentosan on all days, not just off‑training, but i will consider saving it for rest days as you did. the three‑week lag donkere you described matches my own experience – stiffness dropped after a month. i’ll start logging pain before and after physio as suggested and will loop in my PT to keep it safe.
  • aspiring_codes: Thanks for the heads‑up! I’ve tried a glucosamine/chondroitin combo after my own knee scope. I noticed a subtle lift in morning stiffness after about three weeks, which lines up with what you saw. I track pain scores after PT and meds, it really helps spot trends. Always loop in the PT before adding anything new. 👍
