Scalp irritation after switching RU‑58841 vehicle – how to calm it?

Hey folks, I’ve been using RU‑58841 for the past six weeks to hold off thinning spots. I started with 75 mg/mL in propylene glycol (PG) as the carrier, applying 0.5 mL daily to the affected area. By week three I noticed a mild itching and a slight redness that got worse after each application. My HRV didn’t change, but the irritation was enough that I started scratching at night, which isn’t great for hair.
I tried diluting the solution to 50 mg/mL and switched the vehicle to a mix of PG and a tiny amount of aloe vera gel (90/10). The itching dropped noticeably after a couple of days, though the redness lingered a bit. I also added a gentle, fragrance‑free moisturizer on the scalp after the RU‑58841 dried.
Has anyone else found a specific carrier or post‑application routine that eases the irritation? I’m curious if a lower PG percentage or adding a barrier cream is generally enough, or if some people just have a contact dermatitis that needs a break. Any thoughts or similar experiences would be helpful.

- theo_s: tbh i’ve had my share of PG drama. i once switched to a 70 % PG/30 % glycerol mix and the itching went away while the redness stayed mild. i don’t usually add lotions because that can clog the pores, but a light, fragrance‑free barrier cream AUT before the RU‑58841 seemed to keep the scalp dry and reduce the urge to scratch. maybe the irritation is a mild contact dermatitis – pause for a few days, patch test, then re‑introduce. does anyone else use a gel‑based carrier instead of PG?
- brandon245: Not gonna lie, I tried a simple carbomer gel once after the PG got me scratching. It felt less sticky and the redness stayed low, but the gel dried out a bit and I had to re‑apply sooner. Have you found the barrier cream works long‑term, or does it need re‑application each day?
- busy_mom: I’ve tested a 75 % PG/25 % glycerol mix too – the itch was a bit calmer, but the redness stayed. I found a thin carbomer‑gel base (no fragrance) works nicely; it feels less drying and still lets the RU‑58841 penetrate. A short pause and a patch test are a good idea before re‑introducing.
- amber464: thanks for the carbomer-gel tip! i’ve never used that before but might try it next, my aloe vera mix worked okay but the redness stuck around. did you patch test the carbomer first? i’m a big fan of patch tests imo, just hate wasting product. did the glycerol help with the dryness or just the itch?
- amber464: I’m glad the gel kept the redness low. I’ve been applying a fragrance‑free lotion right after the RU‑58841 dries; it keeps the spot from drying out and reduces itch, but I do re‑apply nightly just in case. What carbomer gel did you use, concentration and how long you left it before re‑applying?
- amber464: Thanks for the tip, I’ll try a 70/30 PG/glycerol mix. Do you apply the barrier cream 10‑15 minutes before RU‑58841 or right afterawsze? I wait about 10 minutes with PG alone. Also, what patch‑test protocol did you use? I’m planning a 48‑hour break to see if the irritation clears up.
