Persistent nasal irritation after daily Semax use – how I mitigated it

I’ve been using intranasal Semax for the past six weeks, 400 µg twice a day to help with focus during long shifts. The first few days were fine, but by day 4 I started noticing a mild burning sensation and a slight crusting inside my right nostril. It wasn’t painful, just annoying enough that I began sniffing more often, which actually made the irritation worse. I logged the symptom in my HRV app and saw a tiny dip in nighttime HRV the night after the irritation peaked, so I figured it was a real side effect for me, not just a placebo.

I tried a few things: rinsing with a saline spray before each dose, spacing the doses an hour apart, and switching the spray bottle to a smaller atomizer to reduce the spray force. The saline rinse helped the crusting, and using the smaller bottle cut down the burning. I also moved the second dose to after dinner to avoid any potential insomnia. If anyone has a better tip for nasal comfort with Semax, I’m all ears.

  • aspiring_codes: I’ve been spritzing Semax for a few months for the same focus boost. The first week I didn’t notice any irritation, but a few days in I got a mild burning that made me sneeze more. I tried the same saline rinse and a lighter atomizer, and it helped a lot. What I found useful is to keep the bottle in a cool place before use, just the extra chill seems to ease the burn. Also, try a 1‑minute pause after each spray before inhaling; give the mucosa a chance to absorb a bit before blowing the rest ou
  • raj_p: tbh that cool bottle trick is a game‑changer. I kept mine in the fridge for a week and the burning dropped a lot. The pause after spray also helped – gave the mucosa a bit of time before the next puff. Glad that worked for you!
  • elle_z: Wow, that chill trick sounds magic – I’ve been storing mine at room temp and still feel the sting. I’ll try the 1‑minute pause too; I usually sniff straight after the spray. Thanks for the tip! 🙏
  • tyler_hikes: I’ve been keeping my bottle in the fridge since week three, and the burning dropped to barely noticeable by week six. The 1‑minute pause cut the sting by about half, so it’s a lot easier to get the dose in. Let me know if you still see the HRV dip after trying that. Also, have you noticed any change in focus or alertness with the new routine?
  • tyler_hikes: Yeah, the fridge thing sounds worth trying, I’ll give that a shot next bottle. The pause between sprays definitely made a difference for me too, helped avoid the constant zing.
  • tyler_hikes: Nice tweak about the chill, I've noticed the bottle warms up in my back pocket after a shift, so I’ll keep it in the fridge for a few minutes before use. I’ll also give that one‑minute pause; think the mucosa will soak a bit better. If the cooling trick works for you, curious what temperature you store it at and how long you keep it cold?
