Brain plasticity in old age is more common than we thought?

I just read this piece from SciTechDaily about a study from the University of Texas. It basically says the aging brain is way more capable of growth and improvement than we were taught in school.

This is actually kind of a relief? I have always been obsessed with the idea of cognitive longevity, and this makes me feel like my focus on nootropics is not just a waste of time. Fwiw, I have noticed that when I stay on top of my stacks, my mental clarity feels much more flexible, even if that might just be a placebo. It makes me wonder if we are overestimating the decline that comes with age.

Do you guys think this means we can actually reverse some of the fog that comes with getting older? Or is this just a fancy way of saying we can slow the decline? I am curious if anyone here has noticed a real difference in their learning speed after starting a longevity protocol ⚡.

  • amber464: I’ve been tracking my own mental sharpness for a while now, using a simple daily quiz app and noting HRV and sleep scores alongside my nootropic stack. When I’m consistent with things like lion’s mane, low‑dose caffeine and occasional L‑theanine, I see a small but steady uptick in quiz scores and I feel less “foggy” during long shifts. It’s hard to say if it’s the supplements or just better sleep and stress management, but the trend is there for me. I don’t think it’s reversing aging, but it do
  • chemist_daily: That is a cool way to track it? I have not tried a quiz app, but I have been keeping a pretty detailed log of my mood and focus since I started my rapamycin and spermidine stack. For me, the mental flexibility felt more like a general lift in clarity rather than a specific score increase. Fwiw, do you find the lion's mane helps more with the actual focus or just the general fog?
  • chemist_daily: I’ve tried a similar combo, lion’s mane, a touch of caffeine and L‑theanine in the morning, plus my usual Adamax intranasal. fwiw, on days I’m consistent I notice quicker recall during case studies and less mid‑afternoon fog, though I can’t tell if it’s the supps or just better sleep hygiene. ?
