Oxandrolone lipid crash at low dose, how fast does HDL usually recover?

Anecdotally I ran a short oxandrolone cycle at the lower therapeutic range, around 12mg split twice daily, for about 6 weeks after a surgery to try to preserve muscle while I was stuck not training. I got bloodwork right after and my HDL had dropped pretty significantly, like cut nearly in half from my baseline. LDL nudged up a little but nothing crazy. I was not expecting that kind of hit at that dose since everyone says low dose anavar is "mild."

It has been about 5 weeks off now and I have not retested yet. Gonna pull labs again in another couple weeks but I am kinda anxious about whether it bounces back on its own or if I need to actively do something. I already eat pretty clean, fish oil, cardio when I can.

Has anyone here tracked their lipids before and after a short oxandrolone run? How long did it take for HDL to come back to your normal range? Did anyone find anything that actually helped speed it up, or is it just a wait-it-out situation? Also curious if anyone noticed the HDL drop happens faster at lower doses than people claim, because that matched my experience for sure.

  • swims_runner: Man that HDL crash is no joke even at low doses, I've heard the same thing from guys who thought 10-15mg would be harmless. I havent run oxandrolone myself so I cant give you a direct timeline, but from what I've seen people talk about, HDL usually creeps back over like 8 to 12 weeks post-cycle if everything else is on point. Some guys said niacin helped them but thats kinda hit or miss and can mess with your liver enzymes so maybe not worth stacking on top of recovery. Honestly if you're alrea
  • vet_former: Yeah that 8‑12 week window lines up with what I’ve seen too, my HDL took about ten weeks to creep back after a similar low‑dose run, and I didn’t add anything extra, just kept the fish oil and light cardio. Just wait for the labs, they’ll tell the real story.
  • nof1_nate: The 8 to 12 week window sounds about right from what ive seen discussed, imo. The niacin idea is worth being cautious with though. Flushing aside, sustained-release niacin is the one that actually moves HDL in research but its also the form most associated with liver enzyme elevations. Immediate-release niacin is less hepatotoxic but the lipid effect is weaker. Probably not worth complicating recovery with that right now. Fish oil, cardio, and patience seem like the cleaner play. When you retes
  • reads_grinder: Yeah imo the waiting game is the right call here. I hit similar HDL drop on a low dose run years back and it took maybe 9-10 weeks before my numbers looked normal again. Fish oil and cardio is probably enough, adding more stuff just complicates things. Labs will tell you what you need to know.
  • tracker_jade: 9-10 weeks is reassuring, that lines up roughly with when I am planning to retest. Did you retest at that point and see full recovery, or was it still creeping back up? Just wondering if I should expect it to be all the way back or just trending in the right direction by then.
  • tracker_jade: Yeah that makes sense on the niacin, I was kinda eyeballing it as a shortcut but you are right, adding a liver stressor right now seems counterproductive when I am just trying to let things normalize. Appreciate the breakdown on immediate vs sustained release, I had not really thought about the liver enzyme angle. Good call on the fasting too, my baseline draw was fasted so I will make sure the next one matches. Did your HDL fully bounce back to pre-cycle numbers or did it settle slightly lower
  • tracker_jade: Ten weeks is honestly reassuring to hear. I was kinda hoping I would be back to baseline by week 7 or 8 but sounds like that might be optimistic. Did you retest at any point before the ten weeks, or did you just wait it out and pull labs once? I am trying to decide if I should test now at week 5 or just save it and wait another month.
  • tracker_jade: Yeah I am getting a full panel, CMP and lipid fractionation if I can swing it. The 8 to 12 week timeline is kinda what I was hoping to hear honestly. I will be at about 7 weeks when I pull labs so if it is still tanked I will just wait and retest again closer to that 12 week mark. The niacin thing is interesting, I have heard mixed things on it too. Seems risky to throw something else at my liver while it is still recovering from the oxandrolone. Gonna hold off on that for now.
