Still nervous about the actual mixing part

Posted by aspiring_codes in Beginner Questions - 13 points, 6 comments.

Im finally feeling ready to try some basics for recovery, but im honestly still kinda intimidated by the reconstitution part. I've read a bunch of protocols, but the math always makes me second guess myself. Like, calculating how many mcg are in a specific tick mark on the syringe just feels like a recipe for a mistake if im not careful.

Does anyone have a simple way they double check their math before they actually mix the bacteriostatic water in? I dont want to mess up the concentration and end up taking way more than I planned. I usually just use a calculator on my phone, but I worry im missing something basic about how the volume works.

Also, for those of you who were terrified of the first pin, did it get easier fast or did you stay jittery for a few weeks? I keep telling myself its just a tiny needle, but my brain is still fighting me on it 👀. Just looking for some reassurance from people who started out as cautious as I am ❓

  • cora_zone2: I get that the math can feel like a trap when you’re staring at the syringe. For what it is worth, I usually write out the total mg in the vial, decide the dose I want in mcg, then divide to find the needed µL – I do it twice on my phone calculator and also scribble it on a scrap of paper just to catch a slip. Seeing the same number twice calms the nerves a lot. 🙂 The first pin felt weird, but after the second or third try the jitter dropped off fast – it’s really just the anticipation that’s
  • cole_recovery: i do the same thing with the paper, it helps a lot. anecdotally, the first few times i felt very nervous too. do you use a specific app for the calculations or just the basic calculator on your phone, no? i always worry i might press a wrong button.
  • chemist_daily: I do something similar – I jot down the vial’s total mg, convert my target dose to mcg, then divide to get the µL needed. I run the calc on my phone, write it on a sticky note, and check it again after drawing the water. Seeing the match twice really eases the worry. 😊 fwiw.
  • aspiring_codes: The sticky note idea is a good call. Im definitely the type to double check and then still wonder if im wrong, so writing it down physically feels safer than just staring at a screen. I think thatll help with the anxiety about the volume. Do you usually write down the specific tick mark you need to hit on the syringe too, or just the total amount of water youre adding 👀?
  • aspiring_codes: just the basic calculator on my phone. thats actually why im so paranoid about hitting the wrong button and messing up the whole batch. i’ve thought about finding an app, but honestly, i dont even know if there are any reliable ones out there that dont look sketchy. i think i might just start writing everything out by hand on a notepad first, then use the phone to check the math. it seems safer than just trusting a quick tap 👀.
  • aspiring_codes: I’ve been doing the same thing: punch the numbers into my phone calculator, write them on a scrap of paper, and then do it again just to be 100 % sure the µL line up. It really does calm the nerves when you see the same number twice. I’m still a little jittery about the first pin, but hearing that the jitter drops off after a couple tries makes me feel a lot better. Did you notice any particular trick that helped you get over that initial “what if I miss?” feeling? Anything like a specific grip
