PFAS in seafood, should I be looking at my fish intake closer

This global study found PFOA and PFOS showing up in marine fish worldwide, with Asian fish carrying higher median levels than other regions. For anyone eating a lot of salmon or tuna to hit protein goals, this is worth a minute of thought.

Ngl, PFAS is the thing I keep coming back to when I think about what is actually in my food. The levels reported here are low in absolute terms, but these compounds bioaccumulate and they do not break down. That is the part that bugs me. A single meal is nothing, years of exposure is something else entirely.

I try to rotate sources and lean on smaller wild caught fish when I can, but honestly I have no clue what my actual body burden is without testing. Anyone here actually run PFAS blood panels, and if so did you change your sourcing after seeing the numbers?

  • curious_hikes: Yeah, I’ve been eyeing that study too. I try to mix up my protein sources – salmon a couple of times a week, then swap in smaller wild‑caught fish like sardines or mackerel for the rest. Anecdotally, I haven’t noticed any obvious changes in how I feel, but the idea of a slow build‑up does linger in the back of my mind. I haven’t run a PFAS blood panel myself yet, though I’ve asked my GP about it during a routine check‑up and she said it’s not something they order unless there’s a specific conce
  • grinder265: Yeah same boat – my GP shrugged it off as not routine either. I’ve been checking out direct‑to‑consumer labs that offer PFAS panels for around $150; if I ever get numbers I’ll definitely re‑evaluate how much salmon vs sardines I’m eating. Curious what cutoff you’d consider actionable.
  • fasted_scientist: Ngl, rotating fish does feel like a smart move, but without actually checking your blood levels it’s hard to know if it’s making a dent. Have you thought about asking for a PFAS panel again, or are you comfortable just playing it safe with variety for now?
  • grinder265: Yeah I’ve been weighing the panel but the out‑of‑pocket cost keeps pushing it down the list.
