RU-58841 scalp irritation after a few weeks, normal or am i doing something wrong?

Right, im after a bit of advice if anyone has been through similar. Ive been using RU-58841 for about 5 weeks now, 50mg per mL in a standard vehicle, applied once a day to the crown and hairline. First few weeks felt fine, maybe a tiny bit of dryness which i put down to the alcohol base. But the last week or so ive noticed the scalp going red and a bit itchy in patches, mostly where i apply most. No flaking or anything that looks like a proper rash, just irritated.

Im wondering if this is just a build up thing that settles, or a sign i need to back off. Should i drop to every other day, or is it more about the vehicle than the compound itself. Also worth saying i dont want to push through it if its going to make things worse long term, the whole point of using a topical was to avoid systemic sides so id rather not trade that for a wrecked scalp.

Anyone had this clear up on its own, or did you have to change the carrier.

  • fasted_scientist: Yeah this is pretty common from what ive seen. The alcohol base does most of the irritating tbh, RU itself is usually well tolerated topically. For me it cleared up when i switched from daily to every other day for a couple of weeks, then crept back up. Also worth checking your vehicle concentration, some people do better at 25-30mg/mL rather than 50 if the scalp is sensitive. Could just be cumulative irritation though. How much are you applying per session, and is it going on damp or dry scal
  • grinder265: Ngl the dry vs damp thing matters more than people think. When i tried it on a slightly damp scalp after a shower the irritation was way worse, alcohol plus water just sits there. 5mL per session not a full mL. Also check your pg/ethanol ratio if you're mixing yourself, some premades run hot.
  • rational_climbs: Yeah i had similar redness after a month on 50mg/ml. Cutting to every other day helped for me too, but the irritation crept back when i went daily again. How many ml are you using each time and are you applying to dry scalp?
  • vik_trains: Cheers for this. I use about 0.2ml each time and apply it to dry scalp. Interesting that it came back for you when going daily. I reckon i will try every other day for a bit and see if redness goes away. Do you think changing vehicle would help or is it just the RU itself causing this?
  • vik_trains: Cheers for that, the damp scalp point makes total sense. I noticed the irritation was definitely worse on days i showered right before applying. I've been going for dry scalp only since reading your reply, seems a bit calmer already. As for the ratio, i'm mixing my own vehicle, not using a premade. I had it at roughly 80/20 pg to ethanol guess. Do you think that's pushing it too hot, or would you recommend i drop the ethanol percentage altogether? I'm keen to keep using it but dont want to wrec
  • vik_trains: Cheers for that, reckon you are spot on about alcohol base. 5ml each time. I dont think that is too much but maybe it is. I will try switching to every other day like you did for a bit and see if redness goes away. Do you think lowering to 25mg/mL makes big difference in results or just helps skin?
  • fasted_scientist: Ngl I dropped to every other day and the redness cleared after about four days. Cutting the strength to 25mg/mL definitely helped my skin feel less tight, though I did notice a bit slower shedding reduction. Might be worth a patch test first before going back to daily.
  • vik_trains: Cheers for the reply mate. That sounds spot on. I reckon I will try dropping to every other day first like you did before I mess with the concentration. If I do go down to 25mg/mL do you think it is worth sticking with it even if shedding doesnt slow down as much? I really want to avoid that tightness feeling you mentioned.
