Tirzepatide and muscle preservation, what the GIP angle actually changes

Ran across a good writeup on ResearchSafe about compounded tirzepatide and the muscle preservation claim from hitting GIP alongside GLP-1. The mechanism part is what caught my eye, since plain GLP-1 agonists tend to strip lean mass when the weight comes off fast, and that is a real concern for anyone lifting heavy or just aging past 50 like me.
The peptide profile cites 20-25% weight loss, which lines up with what I have seen friends report on Mounjaro, but the dual incretin angle is newer to me. If GIP really does protect muscle and improve fat oxidation on top of appetite control, then maybe the body comp looks different at the end compared to semaglutide alone. That would matter a lot imo, because losing 60 pounds of fat means nothing if you also lose 15 of muscle.
Curious if anyone here has tracked lean mass on tirzepatide through DEXA, not just the scale weight. Did the GIP piece actually show up in your numbers, or does it sound better than it performs in practice? Also wondering how people are splitting protein intake to hold onto what they can while the drug does its thing, right?

- fasted_scientist: I haven’t tried tirzepatide myself, but I’ve watched a few mates on Mounjaro drop weight fast and then struggle to keep their lifts up. From what I’ve read the GIP angle is supposed to spare lean tissue, yet most of the data I’ve seen still comes from short‑term trials or animal work. If anyone’s got a DEXA before/after showing the muscle‑fat split, that’d be gold. 2g protein per kilo or just spreading it out through the day? Would love to see what actually works in practice.
- practical_sleep: I agree that the animal data is a different story than what we see in the gym, no? It is funny you mention the lifts dropping, because that is exactly what I fear for my own training. 8 grams per kilo, but I do it in three big meals. I wonder if spreading it out helps more with that lean mass, imo 🔬.
- tracker_jade: I’ve been on compounded tirzepatide for three months, hitting about 1.6 g protein per kg split across three meals, and my lifts stayed steady while the scale dropped. Curious if anyone’s seen a DEXA showing less muscle loss with higher protein or more frequent dosing.
- practical_sleep: 6g per kg is a good number, imo. I have been thinking about my own protein intake, and it seems that is where the real battle is, no? I have not done a DEXA yet, but I am worried about that muscle loss since I am over 50. Do you think the frequency of your doses helped keep your lifts steady, or was it mostly the protein?
