Cochrane says GLP-1s work for weight loss, but we need more independent trials

Came across the Cochrane review on GLP-1 drugs and weight loss. Basically they are saying the drugs do work for shedding kilos, and the effect isn't tiny either, though they are hammering on the point that most of the big trials are funded by the companies making the drugs, so we need more independent studies before anyone calls this sorted.

That part stuck with me. From my own messing about with weight loss and tracking the numbers, the appetite suppression bit feels real to me, but the long-term stuff, what happens when you come off, muscle loss, all that, nobody really has clean data on it yet. An independent Cochrane pass is grand to see, even if it is basically saying "we still do not fully know."

Has anyone here read the full review? Curious if they dug into muscle mass retention at all, because that is the thing I keep an eye on more than the scale now.

The appetite suppression is the easy part to see and feel for yourself. What happens after you stop, that is where I get twitchy. Rebound weight gain rates in the extension studies look rough to me, but again, who ran those. I did not read the full Cochrane review yet, just the summary. Did they break out body composition at all or stick to scale we
  • tired_lifter20: Reckon they mostly stuck to scale weight. That's the problem with these big reviews, they love a simple number. For me, the muscle loss is the real worry. If you're just losing lean mass, you're basically just making yourself frail... Was there any mention of lean mass in the summary you read?
  • theo149: If I remember right the plain language summary was mostly about kilos lost and side effects, nothing much on body composition. The full text probably has it buried somewhere but I only skimmed the summary myself, will go back through it properly this week.
  • theo149: Yeah that is exactly where my head is at too. I only read the summary as well and skimmed the abstract so I could be missing something, but from what I saw they stuck mostly to scale weight and quality of life stuff, nothing clean on body composition. The scale lying thing is the whole reason I started tracking DEXA instead, because the number on the bathroom floor was telling me grand news while my muscle mass was quietly going the wrong direction. Have you looked at any of the extension studie
