If the US chemical safety board is being stacked with industry insiders, can we trust safety assessments?

The Guardian just published a piece about Trump appointing industry-aligned people to the key federal chemical safety advisory board. Former EPA scientists are saying the board will basically rubber-stamp whatever industry wants, and that research supporting industry positions will get prioritized over independent science.

This kind of hits different when you are already in a space where "research compound" means almost nobody has properly studied the long-term effects on humans in the first place. We are already operating with thin safety data on a lot of these peptides, eh. If the regulatory bodies that are supposed to be catching problems are compromised, it just makes me trust the whole system even less. Fwiw, I have always taken the stance that you have to do your own homework, get bloodwork, and start low. This article makes me feel like that approach is even more necessary.

Does anyone here actually rely on US regulatory safety data when deciding what to run, or do you mostly go by community experience and whatever published studies you can find on your own? πŸ“°

  • quiet_sleepnerd: Yeah fair, both sides do it, that's not really the point lol. Anecdotally i lean on the actual lit way more than any regulator too, same as you. But it does sting a bit when the board that's supposed to vet the underlying research is basically picked by industry πŸ“š

If the people picking what gets studied in the first place have skin in the game, that tilts everything downstream. I hear you on leaning on the actual lit, that has been my approach too.

  • nomad_brandon: For what it is worth pubmed is kinda where i land most of the time too but i have found that searching the actual peptide sequence or fragment name sometimes pulls up stuff that the generic name misses. Have you tried looking at examine dot com for the more supplement-adjacent compounds? Not super deep but decent starting point. Anyone here use any of the paid databases and find them worth it?
