CJC/Ipa before bed vs right after a workout, does timing actually move the needle?

Bit of a devils advocate question here. Most protocols I've seen stack CJC/Ipa about an hour before bed to ride the natural overnight GH pulse. Sounds clean on paper, but ngl I keep wondering if a post-training dose is the smarter call.

The reasoning (when I try to steelman the workout side) is that training itself spikes GH pretty hard in the first hour or so after, so adding a secretagogue on top of an already elevated pulse should in theory give you a bigger peak. Plus you're dosing while fasted after a session, which most people say matters for the ghrelin axis.

Counter argument is the recovery window gets you sleep architecture, slow wave sleep, IGF-1 overnight. CJC/Ipa is meant to mimic the natural pattern, and your natural pattern peaks at night, not after a heavy squat session (well, both, but the night one is the bigger one).

For those of you who have actually run both ways, did one feel noticeably better? Recovery, sleep quality, body comp, whatever. I'm trying not to overthink it but I am overthinking it.

  • raj353: I bounced between both setups tbh and honestly couldn't tell a huge difference either way. Sleep felt slightly deeper on the before-bed timing, like I'd wake up less during the night. Post-workout timing felt good for soreness but nothing dramatic. One thing I'd flag, your training GH pulse is real but it's also tied to intensity and sleep debt. If you're wrecked, that post workout pulse isn't gonna be as clean as you'd hope. I land on before bed now mostly because I like stacking the sleep re
  • retired_coldplunge: Makes sense, and I kinda landed in the same spot (before bed won out for me too). The wrecked/sleep debt point is real though. If I'm short on sleep, post workout timing feels like I'm stacking on top of garbage, so it kind of confirms the sleep window call. Fwiw.
  • retired_coldplunge: Yeah, I ended up at before-bed too for pretty similar reasons. (The sleep quality angle is what sold me, fwiw.) I did notice the post-workout timing seemed to hit harder on heavy leg days though. Could just be placebo, but my recovery felt snappier when I timed it that way vs just dosing and going to sleep. Curious if you've tried it split, like a tiny bit post-workout and the rest before bed? I've been mucking around with that idea but haven't committed.
  • fasted_scientist: Honestly the split idea is interesting and I've been circling the same thing without pulling the trigger. My worry is the total daily dose is already on the lower side, so splitting it might just give me two dudded pulses instead of one decent one. Maybe a 60/40 split with the bigger bit at night?
  • fasted_scientist: Yeah exactly, the sleep debt thing is what sold me on nights too, on a wrecked 5 hour night the post workout window just felt like I was fighting upstream. Before bed it actually feels like I'm adding to something rather than scrambling to recover from it. Did you notice the hunger difference between the two or was that pretty similar for you?
  • fasted_scientist: Same conclusion I keep landing on too tbh. The sleep point is what swings it for me, you can actually feel when a dose lines up with your slow wave sleep vs just guessing at a post training pulse. Quick one for you, when you moved to before bed, did you bother with the hour buffer or just dose right before lights out? I've been doing the full hour and it feels a bit anal but I saw it written enough times that I stuck with it.
