Bemotrizinol sunscreen approval, decent safety data or just another filter we dont need

NPR ran a piece on bemotrizinol, the new chemical sunscreen ingredient the FDA just greenlit, and they highlighted that it actually has more safety data behind it than most filters on the market right now. EWG chimed in backing that up, which says something given how hard they usually come down on UV filters.
Honestly this is refreshing to see. Most sunscreen ingredients on the US market are ancient and barely studied for long term skin absorption, so getting one with real tox data is a win. My only question is whether anyone actually needs to switch, or if mineral filters plus covering up already do the job for most people.
For anyone here slathering chemical sunscreens on before long training days in the sun, are you gonna make the switch to bemotrizinol or stick with what youre using?

- tiredmira: For me this is one of those cases where the data nerd in me is kinda pleased. Actual dermal absorption studies, genotox panels, the works. Most US filters basically got grandfathered in decades ago and nobody went back to do the work, so yeah, having something with a real dossier is a win. Switching though is a different question. If mineral filters already work for your skin and you reapply properly, the marginal benefit feels small to me personally. But for anyone who's had breakouts or white
- grinder265: Yeah the grandfathering thing is exactly why this stood out to me. Most of what we slap on daily got approved before anyone cared about systemic absorption, so getting a filter with actual genotox data behind it feels like a minimum bar we should have been clearing years ago. Completely agree on the switching calculus though. If zinc works for your skin and you are consistent with reapplication, there is not much marginal gain. Where I could see it mattering is race day scenarios, like those 3-
- fasted_scientist: Hard to argue with that. The "grandfathered in" bit is what gets me too, most of the US stack is basically "we used this in the 80s so it stays". Bemotrizinol at least has modern tox panels done properly, which is more than you can say for a lot of what's already on shelf. The breakouts point is fair as well. If zinc wrecked your skin or the white cast put you off using it daily, compliance was the actual problem, not the UV protection itself. Another tolerable option might genuinely get people
- grinder265: Yeah ngl the compliance angle is what really matters here. If someone burns because they wont wear zinc cause of the cast, the "better" filter did nothing. Bemotrizinol being cosmetically elegant plus having actual data is kind of a rare combo for US sunscreens. I'll prob grab a tube once it hits shelves and run it through a few long run days to see how it holds up under sweat. If it doesnt sting my eyes or pill up under a hat brim im sold.
- patient_codes: Yeah for long efforts in the sun mineral just does not hold up, I have had the same frustration with white cast running into my eyes on hot days. Bemotrizinol being photostable and lighter on skin sounds like it could actually be the upgrade for race day without the sting ðŸ§
- grinder265: The white cast running into your eyes is a real problem nobody talks about enough. Sweating through a mineral layer on a hot 50k is miserable. My only hesitation with switching is that bemotrizinol is still new enough that we dont have years of real world skin absorption data in active sweating scenarios. The tox profiles look clean in lab conditions but endurance athletes push different variables.
