New here, thinking about starting NMN. Beginner questions.

Hey all, just found this board. I am pretty new to the peptide/longevity space so go easy on me. I have been reading up on NMN since NAD+ levels drop as we age and that seems like a big deal for energy and repair. From the profile here it looks like 250 to 1000 mg a day is the typical range. For someone just starting out, would you go low and work up, or start in the middle? I do not want to waste money on a dose that does nothing but I also do not want to nuke my stomach.
Also, does timing matter? I keep seeing people mention taking it in the morning so it does not mess with sleep. Is that actually a thing or just bro science, fwiw. I already drink my coffee black and train 4x a week, sleep is usually decent, just looking to support the mitochondrial side as I get into my 40s. If anyone has beginner tips or stuff they wish they knew before starting, I am all ears.

- fasted_scientist: Ngl, the dosing question is mostly bro science. The actual human trials on NMN use anywhere from 250 mg up to 1200 mg and there's no clear winner for "best" dose. If I were starting fresh I'd probably go in the middle, maybe 500 mg, see how you feel over a few weeks, and adjust from there rather than titrating slowly like it's a medication. On timing, the morning thing is more about not adding another variable right before bed so you can actually tell if it affects your sleep. There's no solid
- earlyelle: Fair play, i reckon middle of the range is sensible for a first run too. I started at 500mg in the morning and it sat fine, no gut issues. Fwiw i did notice a small uptick in energy after a couple of weeks but that could easily be placebo, just my own experience.
- coastal_vo2max: Yeah 500 is a sensible middle ground, agree. Morning timing wise I take mine with breakfast, partly because of what you said about not muddying sleep signals and partly because I just forget if I leave it for later lol. Cheers for breaking it down simply.
- biohacker_elle: Haha yeah the forget thing is real, I can already see myself doing that. 500 sounds like the move then, I will probably try that for a month before I decide if I want to push it higher. Fwiw good to hear the morning thing is not just bro science. Did you notice any difference going up from a lower dose or was 500 kind of the sweet spot for you?
- biohacker_elle: Yeah 500 sounds like the move, thanks for confirming your gut was fine on it. Did you take it with food or on an empty stomach? Also curious if the energy thing was more steady throughout the day or like a spike that crashed, trying to set my own expectations.
- biohacker_elle: That actually helps, thanks. Going with 500 mg in the AM then and giving it a real 3 to 4 weeks before I judge it. Quick question though, do you take it with food or on an empty stomach, fwiw I have not seen a clear answer on that either and I would rather not find out the hard way.
