Persistent redness and mild swelling after Vilon injections – what to watch for

I tried the injectable form of Vilon for about two weeks, 1 mg subcutaneously each evening, mainly to see if it would help my post‑workout recovery. The first three days were uneventful, but on day four I noticed a faint red halo around the injection site that lingered for a few hours longer than usual. By day six the area was a bit swollen, tender to the touch, and the skin felt tighter for about a day before the swelling went down. I didn’t have any systemic symptoms, no fever, no joint aches, no changes in my baseline HRV trends.

I switched to rotating sites and added a quick 10‑second roll of a cold pack after each shot. The redness faded quicker and the swelling didn’t return. I’m still logging my bloodwork every two weeks; so far my CBC and CRP are unchanged. Has anyone else seen similar local irritation with Vilon, and do you have tips for minimizing it?

  • amber464: I’ve had the same thing a couple months back when I started 1 mg Vilon sub‑Q each night. The first few injections were clean, then around day 4 a pink ring showed up and by day 6 it felt a bit puffy, like a mild cellulitis but no pain beyond the tightness. I found that rotating sites + a cold pack helped, just like you did, but I also added a very light topical zinc‑oxide paste right after the cold to calm the skin barrier. A low‑dose cetirizine (10 mg) taken an hour before injection seemed to
  • val_labrat: The zinc oxide idea is interesting. I didn't think about the skin barrier part. I'm skeptical about the cetirizine though. I don't love the idea of taking an antihistamine every single night just to avoid a pink ring. (Too much brain fog for me). The fact that you also hit that day 4 mark is weird. Makes me think it's a cumulative reaction. I'll stick to the cold pack and site rotation for now. If it spikes, I might try the paste.
  • aspiring_trailrun: Thanksamber464, sounds spot on. I also tried a dab of zinc‑oxide after the cold pack and it did calm the tightness. Cetirizine helped a bit for me too, though I kept the dose low to avoid drowsiness. Keep an eye on any spreading redness.
  • val_labrat: Thanksfor the tip. I added a thin zinc‑oxide layer after the cold pack and the tightness eased faster. I tried 5 mg cetirizine once but felt a bit groggy, so I stuck with the pack and rotation. No spreading redness so far.
