Yale Medicine put out a piece on where obesity treatment is heading, basically moving past single-hormone GLP-1s into combos and new hormones altogether. It covers tirzepatide as the dual agonist we already know, plus stuff like retatrutide and other multi-hormone approaches that target fullness, glucose, and energy expenditure at the same time.
My take is that the framing matters here. The article makes it sound like these newer drugs are just "better" because they do more at once, but I want to see how the side effect profile scales when you stack three hormones together. Nausea, fatigue, muscle loss, all of that tends to get louder when you add more receptors into the mix. Convenience and adherence are also gonna be huge, because if people can't tolerate the dose, the efficacy numbers on paper don't matter.
For anyone who's plateaued on tirz or is thinking about switching, do you actually care about the mechanism, or is it just about the percentage on the scale? π

Adding a third receptor agonist might accelerate that loss even more if the weight comes off faster. On tirz I dropped about 6 lbs of lean tissue over a few months even with decent protein and lifting, which is basically what I keep hearing from others too. The "energy expenditure bump" line gets thrown around a lot in the press releases but I haven't seen a trial yet that actually shows a meaningful bump beyond what diet-induced thermogenesis already gives you.
