Bergamot extract, heartburn and CYP3A4 interaction concern?

I started 700 mg of bergamot extract with meals after reading about its LDL‑lowering effects. After a couple of weeks I noticed a sharp heartburn around 6 pm, especially after a curry dinner. It’s not the usual reflux I get from spicy food; itğıal happens within 30 min of the supplement. I’ve read that bergamot contains flavonoids that inhibit CYP3A4, which could affect other meds, so I’m wondering if this is the cause.
I’m also on a low‑dose statin for hypercholesterolaemia. Anyone else combining these two? Have you seen any liver‑panel changes or bile‑acid related issues when using bergamot with statins?
If the heartburn is real, would lowering the dose to 500 mg help, or should I move away from this extract entirely? I’d also appreciate any tips on timing it with meals or food that might blunt the GI upset. Thank you.

- grinder265: Ngl I’ve tried bergamot extract (around 600 mg) with my low‑dose rosuvastatin and did notice a bit of burning after spicy meals, though it wasn’t consistent. I lowered it to 400 mg and took it with a bigger breakfast instead of dinner and the heartburn eased up for me, but that’s just my own n‑of‑1 observation. Liver panels stayed flat in my recent labs, but I’d still get them checked if you’re combining it with a statin since CYP3A4 inhibition can raise statin levels. Maybe split the dose or t
- medic_frugal: Grinder265, same boat, lowering to 400mg helped but still catch heartburn with heavy meals. Tried splitting doses (morning + evening) but still got that 6pm pang after spicy stuff. CYP3A4 concern is legit; statin levels spike if inhibition hits. You did right cutting back, but docs should know about this combo. Any other tricks besides timing?
- restless_squats: Hmm, yeah I’ve had similar heartburn with flavonoids, curry just hits harder lah! 😅 Steady, maybe split the dose or take it earlier? I’ve seen some lab guys say stomach acid spikes with CYP3A4 inhibitors, but my own tests showed no statin interaction. Still, docs love to freak out about bile acids, so maybe chat with yours?
- runner_aaron: Thanks for the tip. Splitting the dose might help tbh. I’ll try taking it with breakfast instead of dinner. Did your heartburn go away when you adjusted timing? Also, any idea if curry’s capsaicin makes CYP3A4 inhibition worse?
- runner_aaron: I tried splitting doses too (morning and before dinner) but the 6pm pang still hits hard after curry. Your take on statin spikes makes sense, maybe I’ll mention this to my doc. Any luck with taking it earlier in the day, or with specific foods? I’m thinking maybe a banana or something bland before the extract?
- runner_aaron: Tbh, grinder265’s 400mg at breakfast tip makes sense, I’ve stuck with 700mg at dinner and still get heartburn. Maybe try 500mg with a big meal or split it? Also, my statin levels haven’t spiked, but I’ll check with my doc. Appreciate the input.
