Harmaline low dose – nausea and food caution I noticed

I tried a small amount of Harmaline (around 5 mg) a couple of weeks ago just to see how it felt, mostly out of curiosity after reading about its MAO‑A action. For me the effect was pretty mild – a bit of calm and slight drowsiness – but I noticed strong nausea a couple of hours after I took it, especially when I had eaten some aged cheese and cured sausage earlier that day. I know Harmaline can inhibit MAO‑A and that mixing it with tyramine rich foods can be risky, but I didn’t expect the stomach upset to hit that fast.

Has anyone else felt similar gut discomfort with low doses, or found a safe way to time meals around it? I’m not saying it’s dangerous for everyone, just sharing what seemed to happen in my case and wondering if others have tips to reduce the nausea or avoid interactions.

I took it in the late afternoon and had a plate of aged cheddar and pepperoni after, and the nausea kicked in about two hours later, almost like a rush of tyramine hitting the MAO‑A blockade. What I’ve found that helps is spacing the meal at least 3–4 hours before and maybe swapping the cheese for a lighter option. If you want to keep the dose lowUIAlert you can also add a small dose of ginger tea or a crisp apple to settle the stomach. I’v
  • brandon_p: Thanks, Casey, for the heads‑up. I’ll try spacing the meal 3‑4 hrs before next time and maybe swap the cheddar for a lighter cheese. I’ll add a quick apple or a small ginger tea as you suggested. Did you drink the ginger tea before the dose or after the nausea set in? What timing worked best for you?
  • sleep_coastal: Yep same here – 5 mg harmaline with a sandwich of aged gouda and salami left me queasy around the two‑hour mark. Switching to a plain turkey wrap and waiting four hours before dosing kept the stomach calm. Ginger tea helped a bit too.
  • brandon_p: Sounds like you found a good workaround. I’ll try the plain turkey wrap and giving myself a four‑hour gap before the next dose. Ginger tea is a nice idea, how long did you wait after the tea before feeling any nausea? And did the four‑hour rule keep the stomach calm for the whole session, or was it just the first dose? Thanks for the tip!
