First Week on Met چه Bix – Energy, Sleep, and the Slight Metallic Taste

Not gonna lie, I've just started 500 mg of metformin daily and have been tracking my energy and sleep. The first couple of days I felt a bit off, and later I noticed a faint metallic taste that lingers when I drink water. I’m not sure if that’s normal or just my body adjusting.

In the evenings I’ve been falling asleep a bit earlier, and the first night I woke up feeling a little more refreshed than usual. The idea that metformin activates AMPK and mimics caloric restriction has me curious – I read that it can improve mitochondrial function and even boost autoph ýa. However, I’m watching my B12 levels and doing a simple blood test after a month.

I’ve also been keeping a log of my meals and any GI upset, because we know that’s a common side effect, and I want to see if it settles down or if I need to split the dose into morning and evening. If anyoneaville has started metformin and has noticed similar changes, I’d love to hear what happened for you.

  • kayla_s: I’ve been on metformin for a couple of weeks now and the metallic taste is a pretty common early side effect, probably from the tablet coating. I stuck with a single 500 mg dose in the morning for the first week, but the next few days I split it – 250 mg at breakfast and 250 mg at lunch – and the taste faded.ೋಜI did notice that I was falling asleep a bit earlier and my wake‑up feeling was a touch fresher, which lines up with the AMPK story. Keep an eye on your B12; I started my own testing a mon
  • night_researcher310: Thanks for the heads‑up! I did notice the metallic taste but kept it whole. I’m gonna try splitting it like you did and see if it eases. I’ve been feeling a bit more alert in the mornings too. Have you already checked your B12? It’s probably worth a quick test.
  • greg208: I did the blood test next week – just a quick B12 check – and it came back in the low‑normal range so I’ll start a low dose of B12 to see if that helps the taste. Splitting the dose into morning and evening sounds good; I’ll try 250 mg at 8 am and 250 mg at 4 pm to see if the GI upset eases. Have you noticed any change in your alertness after splitting?
  • greg208: Thanks for the tip, Kayla. I’ll try the 250/250 split and see if the metallic taste eases while keeping an eye on any stomach upset. I also noted the early sleep and fresher wake‑upsStreet, could be AMPK, but I’m hoping the bite on my gut settles out. Did you notice any GI changes when you split the dose?
